East Rand United secure home semi in Peregrine League

Things are falling in place for United tol face Vereeniging and Springs will face Boksburg in the semi-finals

East Rand United extinguished their number one threat to hosting a home semi-final when they travelled to Vereeniging and earned a hard-fought 30-24 win on Saturday, July 21.

The loss means the visitors are likely to travel to Reiger Park on August 4 for the semi against Vereeniging. The first semi will see Springs host likely opponents, TW Boksburg.

The semi-final picture will see the repeat of last year’s final that was contested between United and defending champion, Vereeniging.

A lot will serve as an encouragement for the Reiger Park outfit.

Firstly, they’ll have a home ground advantage, secondly one feels that this is United’s best chance to win the Valke Peregrine League judging by their performances and squad, and thirdly, you can bet that the painful loss they suffered in the final against the very same opponents has not been forgotten.

But Vereeniging, who will come in as slight underdogs, are as good as they come in the league.

That’s why they’re the champions. They have the know-how, home or away; they’re a big side and dynamic. All these elements make for a crunching semi-final clash.

United fly-half, Clayton Gindan’s drop goal proved crucial when the bigger picture came to light.

Other point scorers for the local side included forward replacement Bakkies Bakumeni and backline pair, Waylon Thompson and Jackie Jonkers.

Returning incumbent kicker Cameron Rooi converted all the tries.

The Valke Peregrine League final will be on August 18 at the home of Valke rugby, the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park.

Scorers: United: Tries – Waylon Thompson, Jackie Jonkers, Bakkies Bakumeni. Conversions – Cameron Rooi (3)

Penalties – Cameron Rooi, Clayton Gindan. Drop goals – Clayton Gindan – @SabeloBoksburg
