Team C16 celebrates achievement of athletes at Comrades 2018

David Gamede and Pakati were the first male and female to cross the line for Team C16, respectively.

For the second time since its official formation in 2015, Team C16 hosted its annual Comrades dance at Clearwater Estate on July 14.

Three years ago in Sunward Park, coach Benzi Tenza, Maria Gumede and Hulikani Nyathi met and ran 6.5 kilometres in preparation for the 2016 Comrades Marathon – and so the name Team Comrades 2016 (Team C16) was born.

The team has since expanded to 150 members.

The main item of the formalities was the recognition of the team’s top achiever’s in one of the world’s gruelling races.

The team had multiple novices complete the race, including a host of runners who achieved personal bests – a good sign for the future.

But the day belonged to the Green number achievers. They are Busiswa Pakati, who completed her tenth race and Mandi Dudula, who got his twentieth race under his belt.

Of the team’s 150 members, 88 lined-up in Pietermaritzburg with 82 finishing. Of the 82, 24 were novices.

Team C16 brought home 14 Bill Rowan medals, 48 bronze and 20 Vic Clapham honours.

Team C16 was formed to assist runners from all walks of life to train together, primarily to prepare for the Comrades Marathon. The team was also formed to encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle through exercise.
