Thompson strikes as East Rand United rout Brakpan

The win, however, was dampened by serious knee injuries suffered by backline duo Juan Botha and Lourens Boddington – which have ruled them out for the rest of the season.

East Rand United outside midfielder Waylon Thompson grabbed a hat-trick of tries as United beat Brakpan 63-21 for a bonus-point win at the Bosman Stadium on June 23.

The half-time score of the Valke Peregrine League encounter was 27-11 to the visitors.

United went out of sight following the interval as they proved too good for the once powerful hosts.

All of Hanriel Coetzee, Tiaan Ramat, JP Fleming, Leon Potgieter and replacement Jackie Jonkers joined Thompson in the try-scoring fest.

Incumbent kicker Cameron Rooi, who came off the bench early as part of an enforced substitution, continued to show his accuracy from boot, converting seven of his side’s total eight tries and adding three penalties as well.

The Reiger Park outfit had a rather stuttering start despite being 27-11 up by half-time – a process coach Stephan Nel said came down to his side trying hard to enforce their authority.

“I told the guys to not force the issue and rather play our normal running game, keeping ball-in-hand. We scored 40-odd points in the second-half because we went back to playing our normal game,” said the mentor, who’s seen his side dishing out a fair share of heavy defeats this campaign.

This was one of those as United look more likely by the week to return to the Barnard Stadium for the second year in succession for the final – with Vereeniging and Springs the likely opponents.

Incumbent skipper Fanie van Staden is also out for the rest of the campaign because of a knee setback.

Meanwhile, on the positive, vice-captain Calvin Jantjies returned from injury and came on off the bench.

The team was led out by loose forward Jonathan Botha.
