Local teens ‘escape’ legal repercussions with serious warning

The police stressed any behaviour of vandalism can never be condoned and it will not be tolerated, no matter the motive.

Three teenagers from a local high school left a negative mark on Laerskool Goudrand.

The suspects were reprimanded by the Boksburg North SAPS for malicious damage to property and for trespassing.

A learner of Laerskool Goudrand witnessed the events and identified the suspects who vandalised the property of the school in Sixth Street, Boksburg North.

Capt Juanita Coetzer, the spokesperson of the Boksburg SAPS, confirmed that the suspects entered the property on May 19 when they were playing on the rugby field.

“The actions were not as innocent as they seemed because the suspects went into the school with an agenda. They turned the CCTV away to avoid being caught on screen.

“They then continued to turn over all the dustbins and scattered the premises with trash. They also urinated on the doors and spat against classroom windows.

“They also rolled down the fire-hoses.”

Coetzer explained to the suspects and their parents that tampering with fire safety equipment holds serious consequences.

She also informed them of the legal repercussions that they can face when trespassing, and that a criminal case can be opened and they can be prosecuted.

“The matter was discussed with all interested parties and the suspects received a serious warning as the school did not lay charges.”

Steve Stephansen, the chairmen of Goudrand’s body corporate, said this is not the first time that something like this has happened at the school.

Stephansen said the school is already trying its best to keep its head above water and to keep the children of the community safe.

“These events make it difficult for our school to cope, but we will continue to take care of our learners with love and compassion,” said Stephansen.

“We need to look after the children of our communities and that includes the schools where they learn. After all, education is vital.”

Coetzer stressed that learners should respect the school’s property and be aware that actions have serious consequences.
