R3 000 fine or three months in prison for Tommy Gun

The court handed down the sentence on May 4.

The Boksburg Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Thomas ‘Tommy Gun’ Oosthuizen to pay a R3 000 fine or spend three months in prison in connection with the drugs possession case against him.

Half of the sentence was, however, suspended for a period of five years, on condition that the accused is not convicted of the same offence within the five years period.

Oosthuizen was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

The professional Van Dyk Park boxer, who celebrated his 30th birthday on April 2, has been in prison since he was arrested in Boksburg North on February 3.

Boksburg North SAPS’ Sgt William Makgota was assigned to investigate the matter and his efforts resulted in the conviction of the accused.

His incarceration has dashed his hopes of an international and a local comeback fight and seen Golden Gloves boss Rodney Berman welcome him back into the fold, and then cut him loose again, following Berman signing him to get into the ring with Thabiso Mchunu on July 23.

Oosthuizen also pleaded with the court on February 26 to release him on bail so that he could prepare for a comeback fight in the UK on April 16.

But bail was not granted and the wayward sports star remained behind bars at Boksburg Correctional Services.

He has an assault (with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm) case pending in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court relating to an incident after a fight he won at Carnival City on April 28, last year, and was convicted on a malicious damage to property case late last year. -@MthuphaFanie
