Be wise and check all credentials of employees

A security clearance can be done for R30.

After the kidnapping saga of baby Eden, who was found in Windmill Park, SAPS has again stressed the importance of asking for certain information before employing a domestic worker or child caregiver.

According to Capt Juanita Coetzer from the Boksburg North SAPS, as a potential employer, you have the right to verify information given to you.

“When employing a domestic worker, first ask for an identity document or passport,” said Coetzer.

“Make a copy thereof and keep it somewhere safe. Also ask for the person’s home address and contact numbers,” said Coetzer.

She said the employer is more than welcome to go to the nearest police station or home affairs office to verify if the passport or ID document is valid.

Coetzer confirmed that a security clearance can be done for R30. Proof of residence and the ID of the employer is required.

“It takes about six weeks for the results of fingerprints of the potential employee to be released but this is an important safety measure that can be taken to ensure the safety of the employer and the family.

“Educate your employee not to let anyone into the house, without verifying access with the owner of the residence.

“Teach them to be vigilant and very careful,” said Coetzer.
