Peregrine League: East Rand United again demolish neighbours Boksburg

The reverse game at PG Park ended 48-24 in United's favour.

East Rand United have put it beyond doubt that they are the team to beat in Boksburg, and to a larger extent, probably in the Valke Peregrine League as well.

United again produced a 40+ point performance against TW Boksburg at the Reiger Park sports grounds on May 5, having done so in their previous two games.

This included the first derby of the season against Boksburg in United’s own backyard.

United scored eight tries compared to Boksburg’s four as they completed a convincing double over their neighbours with a 63-27 rout. The reverse game at PG Park was 48-24.

The Owls stayed in the game in the first half, but you got the sense that the home side was always in control, and so it proved in the second stanza as the floodgates opened.

The half-time score was 27-17 to the home side.

TW Boksburg quartet of Adriaan van der Nest, Mitchell Lingenfelder, Damian Diedericks and Adriaan Badenhorst ensured that their side comes out with something from the humiliating loss in form of a bonus point for four (or more) tries.

For United, only captain and number eight Calvin Jantjies was the only forward who scored a try. Other dot downs came from star wing Leon Potgieter and replacement JP Fleming, who both grabbed braces. Star half-back Tiaan Ramat, Jackie Jonkers and Bruce McKenzie also added five-pointers.

They had come in this game at the back of a 44-33 win against Kempton Park, which followed their 48-24 victory at PG Park.

Following this second instalment of the Boksburg Derby, United win 111-51 on aggregate.

This season’s United side have largely changed, but have stuck to their traditional ball-in-hand running rugby game plan, and they’ve been devastating on the offence.

Coach Stephen Nel seems to have found the perfect backline combination and has smoothly covered gaps left by two key players of fly-half Andy Huysamen and flyer Cameron Lentoor.

Nel’s side’s seeming ease in getting to the try-line is testament to the coach and his supporting staff in finding just the perfect combination, which has yielded a ruthless offence.

Scorers:

United: Tries – Leon Potgieter (2), JP Fleming (2), Jackie Jonkers, Tiaan Ramat, Calvin Jantjies (c), Bruce McKenzie. Conversions – Cameron Rooi (7). Penalties – Cameron Rooi (3).
