Panel to be established soon to determine model for metro’s university

This new-generation university is being conceptualised and is envisaged to be established within Ekurhuleni.

During the State of the City Address 2018, Ekurheleni mayor  Masina said the metro has made progress towards the planning of the Ekurhuleni Applied Sciences and Technology University.

“We held a successful university symposium that gave us valuable insights into the path to take towards realising this vision,” said the mayor.

He said this new-generation university is being conceptualised and is envisaged to be established within Ekurhuleni.

“Council will soon finalise the appointment of the University Advisory Panel, consisting of technically competent specialists who will advise us on the best possible model.”

Last year the Advertiser reported on the feasibility study into the opening of a university within the metro.

At the time, Pieter Swanepoel, Divisional Head: Specialist Projects of Ekurhuleni Metro City Planning, said the feasibility study looked at factors such as what other institutes of higher learning are offering, the funding models of competitor universities and fields of study.

According to Swanepoel, the study has proved that the metro, with a population of 3 379 104, definitely needs a university, considering the shortage of skills.
