Local cleaning company steps in to save Penguin Room
This offer of help is a great boost to the arts in Boksburg
The Boksburg Creative Art Centre’s dream of hosting a grand 20th anniversary celebration in its Penguin Room is busy taking flight.
A Plantation business, AMPM Cleaning, run by Suzette and Johan Joubert, deployed a team of 12 staff to the premises in Market Street today (Tuesday) to start the big clean up of the room, which has been occupied by pigeons for the past three years.
The pigeons came in through broken windows and roosted and pooped on everything, including a piano, tables and chairs.
In its heyday, the Penguin Room (so named after a donation of art supplies from Penguin stationers) hosted all sorts of wonderful artistic events, like prize-givings, lectures, exhibitions and themed evenings.
Now, thanks to AMPM Cleaning, the Penguin Room has a new lease on life.
Custodian of the Art Centre Barry de Villiers is over the moon with the Joubert’s generous offer.
“I could have kissed this cleaning team when they arrived this morning!” he said.
“This means so much to the arts in Boksburg; it means so much to us, especially since it is happening in time for our 20th anniversary in April.”
Barry said a really grand affair is being planned and will be hosted in fitting style to celebrate the centre’s milestone and welcome the Penguin Room back into existence.
After only a few hours of the cleaning team scrubbing walls, floors, tables and windows, the room already looked much brighter and fresher.
Johan said they will also be attending to the broken windows with the help of another service provider, to ensure the feathered art lovers are kept outside.
“Our company is very community-orientated. Every year we tackle a community project, like deep cleaning operations at schools and old age homes.
“We are very proud to be helping the Boksburg Creative Art Centre.”
