Angelo community leader gunned down

Sibuyi has been a leader of the community patrollers for years, served as a member of the community leaders and was also a DA branch chairperson in Ward 33.

Angelo informal settlement lost popular community leader Thomas Sibuyi in an execution-style killing yesterday (March 5).

Sibuyi was shot multiple times at close range near the traffic light at the intersection of Field and Main Reef roads, just before 8pm last night.

“We received a call about a shooting in the area and our members rushed to the scene to find Sibuyi lying on the ground,” said Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Sgt Cebisa Maseko.

“He had suffered about nine gunshot wounds. Seven cartridge cases were found at the scene.”

No arrest has been made and the motive for the killing remains unclear.

Maseko said police have launched an intensive investigation into the fatal attack and also need anyone with information to contact the detective branch on 011 841 6860/6859.

  • Councillor reacts

Ward 33 councillor Ashley Hoods described the incident as a tragedy which has caused pain and a serious setback for the community patrollers’ efforts to end crime in the troubled informal settlement.

“As a ward councillor, I’m devastated by the loss of Sibuyi, who was a prominent leader in the area and who worked tirelessly to address the crime issues this community faces,” he said.

“As the DA, it is sad to lose a colleague. He had been working as the DA branch chairperson in Ward 33 for many years.

“The DA Gauteng East Region extends its heartfelt condolences to the Sibuyi family, friends and the community on the loss of their loved one and a community leader.

“We will pursue all avenues to ensure that the perpetrators of this senseless killing are brought to book for their actions.”
