Soul Shack shooting investigation still ongoing

The shooting happened in October, 2017

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has not yet finalised its investigation into the Soul Shack shooting, in which an off-duty police officer is accused of shooting and killing Errol Mommsen.

The 55-year-old Mommsen was shot dead at the Soul Shack pub and restaurant on Trichardts Road, Eveleigh, at about 7pm on October 27, allegedly by the off-duty police officer.

IPID reportedly arrived at the scene and initiated its investigation into the deadly shooting.

According to IPID’s national spokesperson, Moses Dlamini, the department has not yet completed its investigation because there are technical reports that are still outstanding.

He added that at this stage, there is no basis for recommending any suspension of the police officer involved as there is no evidence to suggest that he acted unlawfully.

Dlamini also declined to answer most of the questions the Advertiser posed, saying they are the subject of investigation.

He could not confirm whether a murder case was opened against the officer, how two other people were injured during the shooting and if anyone has been charged in connection with the injuries they sustained.

He could also not confirm reports that the deceased was assaulted, how many shots were fired and how many bullets hit the deceased and the two other people who were injured.

It is unclear if the officer involved has been suspended.

The Boksburg North police, however, previously confirmed that a case of murder was registered following the shooting, adding that two firearms were confiscated at the scene. -@MthuphaFanie
