No jail time as ‘Tommy Gun’ pays up

The case was finalised following full payment.

Professional boxer Thomas ‘Tommy Gun’ Oosthuizen has averted a prison sentence after meeting the condition of his recent release from custody in a malicious damage to property case brought against him by his father.

The condition was for Oosthuizen (29) to pay his father, Charles Oosthuizen, the amount of R8 700 by Wednesday, January 17.

The charge relates to an incident which took place on July 1 last year. Oosthuizen pleaded guilty to the charge on September 12.

The Van Dyk Park resident was remanded in custody after appearing in the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court on December 15, having failed to pay his father by that date (the date originally set for compensation to be paid).

The magistrate granted him until December 21 to pay the compensation.

At his court appearance on December 21, Oosthuizen told the magistrate that R4 000 had been raised and that the balance would be contributed by his brother.

To ensure the full amount was raised, the matter was postponed to December 22 and Oosthuizen was again remanded in custody.

On December 22, the court was informed that the full amount had been raised and would be paid into the complainant’s bank account.

Oosthuizen was therefore released from custody and the matter was postponed to January 17 for payment confirmation.

On January 17 it was confirmed that the full amount was paid last week, and the case was finalised.
