Bidders aplenty at SAPS auction

Scores of generators and tools confiscated from illegal miners within the Ekurhuleni Central SAPS Cluster were among the items on display at an SAPS auction at the Boksburg Wrestling Club in Cason Road (next to Boksburg North Clinic) on the morning of November 23.

Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson, Capt Juanita Coetzer said: “Some are recovered stolen goods that have not been claimed by owners, and some of the items had been in the participating police stations within the cluster for a very long time.

“We have tried tracing the rightful owners of the recovered goods to no avail, and we cannot keep these goods in our stations forever – they have to be forfeited and sold on auction.”

Members of the public arrived in their numbers to review the items they wanted to bid on.

Among the items on auction were generators and other illegal mining equipment seized from zama-zamas within the Ekurhuleni Central SAPS Cluster. Seen at the auction are Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson, Capt Juanita Coetzer and Brakpan SAPS member Lt Col Dana van Der Walt, who chaired the auction in Boksburg.

The goods on offer include state-owned, confiscated and forfeited second-hand furniture, tools and electronic appliances including TV sets, personal computers, digital cameras and DVD players, as well as jewellery, generators and other household items.

Coetzer reminded residents that serial numbers still play an important role in tracing the owners of recovered stolen goods. She urged members of the public to keep proof, such as receipts and serial numbers, of their goods so that they can easily identify and reclaim them from the confiscated stolen goods kept at police storage facilities.

The goods on sale at the auction are expected to fetch a substantial amount of money. -@FanieFLK
