Scribante lifts to be fixed ‘soon’

The Ekurhuleni metro says it is fast-tracking the process of appointing a contractor to repair the out-of-order lifts at the Andries Scribante Haven flats in Cason.

“We are following a shortened supply chain management process that is aimed at ensuring that by end of November a contractor is appointed so as to commence with the project,” said metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

The Andries Scribante Haven is an Ekurhuleni-owned block of flats for the elderly.

The Advertiser reported on the situation at Scribante in two articles, ‘Shameful as elderly must use the stairs’ on page 3 of the issue dated June 23, and ‘Relief as council commits to new lifts for Scribante Haven’ on page 2 of the issue dated October 27.

Ward 32 Councillor Marius de Vos previously told the Advertiser that he put forward a strong motivation for the old lifts to be replaced because this matter was long overdue.

In June this year, one lift had allegedly been out of order for about two months, while the other had not been working for about two years.

For the time being, elderly residents on crutches, in wheelchairs, with walkers and health problems have to continue struggling up and down the stairs at Scribante.
