Sunward Park arms cache of weapons and ammunition uncovered

The Gauteng Flying Squad arrested two people after uncovering a cache of arms and live ammunition in a house in Sunward Park on November 8.

According to Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Sgt Cebisa Maseko, a team of Flying Squad and Crime Intelligence Unit members were following up on information about a man believed to be dealing in gold and other precious metals in Boksburg.

On the corner of Oberon and Nicholson roads, they spotted a silver double cab Toyota bakkie with a Northern Cape registration driven by a 50-year-old man who fitted the description of the suspect they were looking for.

The police stopped the driver and asked to search him. They found gold, three pieces of precious metal and dozens of live rounds of 9mm ammunition.

“When questioned about the live rounds, the man told officers that he owns a licensed gun and showed them the licence. But the officers quickly ascertained the ammunition did not match this weapon,” Maseko said.

The seized goods included live rounds, and numerous weapons.

“That raised more suspicion and police officers asked the suspect to take them to his house, which is in Morkels Street, Sunward Park.

“Here they found six more firearms – three hunting rifles, a shotgun, two revolvers and a rifle butt. Only the revolver and one rifle are registered in the suspect’s name.”

Still not entirely satisfied, the officers called the K9 Unit to the scene to assist with the search, and more live ammunition was found.

In total, the police recovered 250 live 9mm rounds, 71 live 7.5mm rounds, 55 live .38 Special rounds, 60 live .22 rounds and six live shotgun rounds. Twenty-two empty hunting rifle cartridges were also found.

“In attempt to evade arrest, the suspect apparently colluded with his daughter (27), as the daughter arrived with R98 800 to try to bribe the police with. She was immediately arrested,” said Maseko.

The man has been charged with the possession of unlicensed firearms and precious metals, while his daughter has been charged with attempting to bribe a police official.

They are expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
