Boksburg u-9 rugby squad emulate their predecessors
The u-9 Boksburg Rugby Club maintained their dominance in the division when they recently successfully defended their league crown.
The junior Owls were crowned the 2017 Valke Junior Club Rugby champions following a narrow 7-0 win over the Benoni Grizzlies in the final.
Last year’s u-9s achieved the same feat under the tutelage of Duane Pretorius – as they went unbeaten on their way to the title.
Meanwhile, the u-9 B side finished fourth in their league after losing to the Grizzlies’ second side in the third and fourth place play-off match.
“The players truly played for each other and that’s a rare attribute between players at this level,” said coach Wayne Desmore.
“Our team is not just a team, we are the best team.”
During the team’s prize-giving, the following players were recognised for their outstanding contribution:
Player of the Year: Shayne Lourens; Backline Player of the Year: Stephan Vermaak; Forward Player of the Year: Logan Erwee; Most Versatile Player: Willie Pieterse; Most Technical Player: Aljay Olivier; Most Improved Player: Juandre van der Merwe – @SabeloBoksburg
