Unsecured electrical boxes seemingly commonplace in Boksburg

Since the process of "the contracting out of electrical services" by the Ekurhuleni metro, evidence of little or no maintenance can be found in virtually every suburb in Boksburg.

This is according to local resident Clive Watkins, who specifically refers to meter readings, power cuts and the reconnection of electrical supply.

“The degeneration of both business and residential electrical reticulation equipment is ridiculous,” said Watkins.

“Meter boxes and mini substations with no locks, doors missing or hanging on a hinge are commonplace; all of them expose lethal, live conductors.

The Advertiser spotted this electricity box in Olivia Road, Jansen Park. The door was wide open and there was no lock attached.

He has also noticed mini electricity kiosks with broken locks on the latches in Caravelle Road, Impala Park.

“This is either done by irate consumers after Friday afternoon cut-offs or by the meter reading or cut-off contracting company who forgot the key and are forced to break into the kiosk,” explained Watkins.

“This is still an unsafe condition, but very different to a door off its hinges or no door at all.”

The Advertiser invites our readers to comment on other unsecured electricity boxes in Boksburg.

The Advertiser is waiting for comment from the Ekurhuleni metro.
