Vosloorus man sentenced to a year in jail for insulting his wife

Husbands, be careful how you speak to your wife ...

A man who has a history of contravening a protection order was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment for the same offence, in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court, on August 15.

Jabu Hendrick Nthembu (30), of Vosloorus, pleaded guilty to and was found guilty of contravening a protection order issued against him on August 26, 2016, which prohibited him from swearing at or insulting his wife.

He contravened this order on June 13 by calling his wife an “uneducated b*tch”.

In November, last year, Nthembu received a six-month suspended sentence for contravening the protection order on October 7, last year.

Magistrate Jurg Viviers presided and Temba Maluleke represented the state.

Senior prosecutor Henk Strydom said this case serves as an important reminder that domestic abuse is not only about physical abuse.

“Psychological abuse is just as harmful, perhaps even more so than physical abuse. As you can see in this case, abusive words can have harsh consequences in domestic violence cases,” Strydom said.

Strydom was the guest speaker at an Ekurhuleni metro employee well-being function at the Boksburg City Hall on Wednesday, September 13, where he delivered a hard-hitting presentation on domestic violence.

This included information on reporting domestic violence and how the courts deal with cases of domestic violence.

“The crux of my presentation was to urge the women present to take the knowledge they have been equipped with and put it to use in their communities. Don’t wait for Women’s Day or Women’s Month or 16 Days of Activism to speak out against domestic violence,” Strydom said.
