Resident questions identical water and sewerage readings

George Jardine from Van Dyk Park has noticed an “unusual” phenomenon on his latest water and electricity account from the Ekurhuleni metro.

He has noticed the water meter number and the sewerage meter number are the same.

However, even more strange is that the statement indicates identical water and sewerage water consumption readings of 22kl.

“How is this possible?” asked Jardine.

“The water you use for cooking and to water the garden goes through the water meter and not down the drain, and the sewerage water doesn’t go through the water meter.”

According to Jardine, the sewerage water usage should be less than the water usage.

“How does the municipality get their readings? They can’t be pumping the water and sewerage water through the same meter,” he said.

“It’s highly impossible for these two readings to be exactly the same and for the meter numbers to correspond.”

Themba Gadebe, the metro spokesperson, said according to Ekurhuleni’s tariffs, sewerage charges will be linked to the account where the water connection is billed.

“The calculation of the amount due for sewerage charges is done by utilising the water consumption measured by the relevant water meter and the relevant applicable sewerage tariff,” said Gadebe.

“The meter reader contractors read meters on a monthly basis based on a pre-determined reading schedule agreed to by council and the contractor.

“The client is well known to the officials at the Revenue Division in Boksburg and he has previously been invited to discuss any further information they may need with the relevant officials.”
