Illegal electricity connections continue to plague Reiger Park

Thieves continue to wreak havoc with the electricity infrastructure in Reiger Park, causing perpetual blackouts in the area.

Ward 34 Clr Charlie Crawford said despite the metro’s efforts to deal with the problem, thieves continue to illegally and blatantly connect from power boxes, high mast lights and street light poles.

The Advertiser visited one of the hotspots identified by the ward councillor on September 6 and found live electrical cables running on the surface from the substation near Reiger Park Secondary School to the nearby old mine hostel, known as Central hostel, in Joe Slovo informal settlement.

Ward 34 councillor Charlie Crawford expressed his concerns about the dysfunctional street lights in Middle and Leon Ferreira roads.

Crawford said he is also concerned about the dysfunctional street lights in Middle and Leon Ferreira roads, saying they were damaged by thieves who stole the power cables.

The Advertiser has requested comment from the Ekurhuleni metro but none had been received at the time of publication.
