Quick-thinking worker saves company money from robbers

The quick-thinking actions of a petrol station employee saved the business from losing about R80 000 in an attempted robbery on Monday, August 21.

According to Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Sgt Cebisa Maseko the employee went to a bank in Market Street, Boksburg CBD, to deposit money when two armed men tried to rob him on his arrival.

“As the victim was approaching the door of the bank, two men confronted him and aimed a firearm at him.

“The victim immediately threw the bag containing money into the bank, through the door.

“The security guard noticed the attack and immediately closed the door.

“The gunman then opened fire on the victim and shot him in his left leg,” said Maseko.

The suspects were seen jumping into a waiting getaway car and fled the scene.

The money was saved and the injured victim was taken to hospital where he was admitted.

No arrests have been made.

The police are requesting anyone with information regarding this matter, to come forward.

Maseko urged members of the public, including businesses, to avoid using the same routes, bank, date and time when depositing large sums of cash at a bank.

In this case, police believe the robbery was premeditated. The robbers apparently knew the staff member was on his way to the bank.

“It might be that the robbers were delayed, but they clearly knew their target was on his way to the bank,” speculated Maseko.
