Bikers hold a special day for Damien

You can’t help but notice the winning smile of the young boy living with cancer as he sits on the back of a motorbike, dressed in his customised biker jacket.

About a year ago, Damien Cloete (7) was diagnosed with stage four medullablastoma (brain cancer), which has already moved down his spine.

More than R56 000 was raised for this little cancer fighter and his family during a recent fun charity drive, held at The Zone Pub and Grill, in Boksburg.

Nols Coetzee said a prayer for Damien and handed him a Bible.

The motivation behind the charity drive is changing the world for the better, for the seven-year-old, his single father Rudolf and sister Shany (9).

Damien has had over 50 radiation sessions, six chemo sessions and two brain operations.

Medically, nothing more can be done for this little boy, as his body has reached maximum exposure to the treatments.

Still, he is leading a full and active life.

Immortal Guardians MC, in collaboration with non-patched bikers, bikers belonging to councils like Ghostriders, YMC and Escargot MC, worked tirelessly behind the scenes and on the day to make this day successful.

The event kicked off with a convoy of about 100 bikers driving from Orama Roadhouse to The Zone.

A special moment was when biker Herbey Tee escorted Damien on his bike, ‘The Transformer’, to the event.

Nols Coetzee said a prayer for Damien and handed him a Bible.

Entry fee to the family event could be anything from monetary donations to non-perishable food items and clothing for Damien and Shany.

The day revolved around not only Damien but also his sister, who has always had to take a back seat.

Ursula Botha from Immortal Guardians MC and Thea Malan from Just Numbers will set money aside for the monthly payments towards Damien’s care.

Damien’s dad Rudolf wishes to express his heartfelt thanks to the entire biking community and the sponsors for opening their hearts to Damien.

Syndicate Autobody, Bikeshop Suzuki Boksburg and Cayenne Fourways were among the biggest sponsors for the day.

Immortal Guardians MC has registered an NPO to assist the Cloete family.

How did Immortal Guardians MC and Damien’s paths cross? Ursula Botha tells …

The story started when I met Damien Cloete at a petrol station en route to Hartbeespoortdam on April 9, my birthday.

The little boy wanted a helmet from his dad, Rudolf, and came out the shop and saw all the bikes pulling in.

I asked him if he wanted his photo taken and his face lit up with excitement.

We put him on the bike and I took photos.

We had to leave and I forgot to take his dad’s details. I posted the pictures on Facebook and asked if anyone knew them so I could get the photos to his dad to show him. From there my post escalated and the biking community loved the photos so much, everyone wanted to meet this boy.

I got hold of Rudolf through a friend of mine, who knew them from the hospital where Damien was having chemo done.

I found out the entire story and we made his story public and decided to try and make life normal for this family, as Rudolf doesn’t hold a full-time job due to the circumstances.

I found out little Damien is seven and will turn eight in July.
