Police arrest alleged killers of Zuma

Police have arrested two Ulana informal settlement men in connection with the brutal murder of a 29-year-old man.

The victim was shot dead in front of his six-year-old stepson and girlfriend during the early hours of Sunday, March 19.

According to Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Mashudu Phathela, Nkululeko Zuma (29) and his family were asleep in their shack, located in the newly established informal settlement on Commissioner Street, opposite Delmore Gardens, when the pair allegedly forced opened the door to enter the shack.

They then allegedly took Zuma’s firearm, which was reportedly lying under his pillow, and used it to shoot him in the forehead without saying a word.

They then fled the scene with Zuma’s firearm.

One projectile and a spent cartridge were found at the scene.

Police managed to arrest the alleged killers at the crime scene in a joint operation by the newly formed Reiger Park Crime Intelligence Unit and other SAPS units.

The accused, believed to be the deceased’s partner in crime, reportedly went back to the crime scene a few moments after the shooting.

According to Phathela, police officers on the scene approached the suspicious-looking 28-year-old man and interrogated him.

“A few inconsistencies in what he told the officers on the scene led to his arrest, which was shortly followed by the arrest of his 19-year-old co-accused, whom the investigators found in possession of a magazine and live ammunition,” said Phathela.

The accused are due to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court this week on charges of murder and possession of an unlicensed magazine and ammunition.

Phathela said the 29-year-old man allegedly confessed that he and his co-accused attacked Zuma with his weapon.

“The suspect revealed that he spent part of Saturday night drinking with Zuma at the deceased’s residential place.

“When it was time for the suspect to go home, he apparently asked Zuma to lend him his gun to protect himself against criminals. But Zuma refused to do so and this led to an argument between the two.

“The suspect later decided to leave the area and apparently went home, but returned later to attack the victim.”

* In another fatal incident, police arrested a man in connection with the murder of a 21-year-old man, who was stabbed to death on Sunday at about 5pm.

Phathela said the man was killed in a dice game dispute.

“A group of young men were playing dice in Honey Circle Street, Reiger Park when the deceased had an argument with the suspect.

“The suspect took out a knife and stabbed the deceased in the chest once. He was certified dead by the paramedics on the scene.

“The suspect initially fled the scene, but later handed himself over to the police.”

“He was immediately arrested and charged with murder.”

The knife used in the murder was found at the scene.
