CBC outplayed by Kempton

CBC Old Boys’ Premier XI suffered a crushing 125-run loss at home at the hands of rivals Kempton Park in an Eastern Cricket Premier League encounter.

The clash, played under beautiful weather conditions at CBC, was on Sunday, March 12.

The home side knew they were in for a tough challenge from the early stages as Kempton opening duo Wesley Marshall and Jarred Alder set up a flying start for the visitors.

Marshall finished with a damaging 83 runs for CBC while the latter also hit the half-century mark with his 65.

Anton Muller (32) and Armand Erasmus (39) contributed with valuable scores before fellow batsmen Marius Lubbe and Brandon piled on the runs as they ended the visitors’ innings unbeaten to help post up an assuring total of 253/5 in the allotted 50 overs.

You would bet on CBC to challenge the imposing total, especially at home, but the side’s big-name players didn’t step up to the plate.

“You know it’s hard enough batting second on our deck, especially with the ball staying low and slow, which makes it difficult to get the ball away. Our batsmen were dismissed at the wrong time and didn’t adapt to the conditions accordingly,” said CBC’s captain, Nicholas Lockyer.

“We did have hope when myself and Wes (Coulentianos) were batting but unfortunately he went out and the wickets just kept tumbling. This put the nail in the coffin for us.

“We really needed our top six batsmen to step up to the challenge but that didn’t happen.”

Coulentianos and his skipper posted 46 and 34 respectively, the home team’s highest scores as they chased what had clearly become a target beyond reach.

The home side would eventually collapse for a disappointing 128 all-out after 42 overs, handing the away side’s captain Johan Fourie and his teammates an easy win. – @SabeloBoksburg
