UPDATE: Traffic now flowing smoothly on highways

Traffic is now flowing smoothly on both the R21 and R24 highways following chaos this morning.

Traffic was heavily backed up on both highways following a protest by meter taxi drivers against the Uber taxi service.

There were major delays for motorists travelling towards OR Tambo International Airport this morning.

Motorists were advised to use alternative routes.

EMPD spokesman Kobeli Mokheseng said traffic started flowing at around 8.45am.

“Together with the Gauteng Traffic officers we impounded 16 meter taxis which were blocking R21 South by Voortrekker Road near the Airport.

“Some of them then started moving their cars from the highway, said Mokheseng.

He said that the Gauteng Traffic officers are currently addressing the meter taxi drivers at the OR tambo Airport.
