Northerns wins tight bowling affair against CBC

Home side Benoni Northerns maximised their home turf advantage with an imperative bonus-point win against CBC Old Boys in an Eastern Premier League encounter on Sunday, March 5.

It was a rather low-scoring affair at Northerns, thanks to some top-drawer bowling led by star of the day, Northerns’ fast bowler Kundai Matigimu, who produced a match-winning performance of 5/17 in 8.3 overs.

The encounter was also unfortunately marred by controversy.

Batting proved tricky on the Northerns wicket, which has already taken some criticism from previous visitors to Northern Areas.

Controversial umpire decisions also didn’t help matters in not spoiling one of the biggest clashes on the Premier League calendar – leaving the CBC batting order hard done by.

Perhaps this too contributed to the surprising low scoring from both sides, taking nothing away from the brilliant bowling on the day.

The visitors were sent to bat first following Casey Arnold’s loss in the pre-match coin toss.

What would follow attested to the continuous moaning about the champions’ wicket.

High profile dismissals of Easterns star Wesley Coulenthianos (10), Arnold (duck) and Mpho Nzimande (11) saw the Boksburg outfit all-out for 89.

In fact, the highest scorers on the day were CBC’s Jaco Theunisen (29) and Northerns stalwart Ernest Kemm (unbeaten 36).

Northerns wicketkeeper Richard Thompson also enjoyed a terrific day with the gloves, echoing Matigimu’s heroics, taking six catches behind the stumps.

The home side overhauled CBC’s target inside 30 overs, finishing with 90/ 7. – @SabeloBoksburg
