Cricket: Boksburg builds towards something special with another win

The Boksburg Cricket Club’s premier XI faced the Kempton Park promo side in a convincing five-wicket bonus point win on Sunday, March 5.

Kempton, the visiting team, opted to play behind in the crease first after skipper Lee Coetzee got one over his counterpart Adam Forbes in the pre-match coin toss.

Wrong decision – if you’re going to take the game’s outcome into consideration,

Boksburg have been fired up in recent weeks and their performances have attested to this. Everything seems to be falling into place for the new-look, largely young Prince George Park outfit led by a young and hungry opening batsman, who himself has been enjoying red-hot form.

The bowlers have been equally as good, with spin bowler Chris Opperman deserving exclusive mention for his outstanding deliveries which have been, at the best of times, a pain to the opponent.

It was no different in the encounter as Opperman divulged his intentions early on. He would go on to take a season best 5/34 in his allotted 10 overs of bowling – with a hapless Kempton line-up caving in inside the 48th over for a total of 163.

In response, Boksburg made up for an early glitch when opener Jarrod Lloyd walked off without a run. His captain and Johan Nel steadily made up for the loss as they combined for a 100-run second wicket partnership to swing the pendulum in their side’s favour.

Fellow batsmen Tyrone Cameron and Heinrich Cronje would go on to help secure the victory.

Mention must be made of the day’s half-tonners, namely Kempton opener Wade Saxby, who finished with 56, and Boksburg duo Forbes (53) and Nel (63).

Forbes scored his third 50 in as many fixtures.

The wins have represented a turnaround fully welcomed by the club and its supporters, who endured trying times not so long ago.

Could the club be building up to something special?
