Metro to restore the Boksburg Lake to its former glory

The Ekurhuleni Metro has this week revealed that it has recently embarked upon a programme aimed at restoring the Boksburg Lake to its former healthy state.

According to the metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, the municipality has appointed a service provider to undertake scientific studies and to draw up the rehabilitation plan for the lake.

“Scientific studies detailing the current pollution levels were completed at the end of last month and the rehabilitation options are to be finalised by June this year.

“Environmental authorisations for the rehabilitation of the lake should be attained by June next year. This includes the environmental impact assessment, waste license and water use license,” said Gadebe.

Gadebe added that the actual lake rehabilitation is projected to commence in July next year.

The local government’s said failure to maintain the facility, allowing it to degenerate year by year, has drawn criticism from various stakeholders, including the Boksburg Lake Forum, which has since disbanded.
