2 killed, 2 critical in multi vehicle crash on N3

Two male drivers died after six light motor vehicles were involved in a crash on the N3 freeway between Leondale and Old Heidelberg road off ramps in the early hours of today.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesman William Ntladi added that two male patients sustained critical injuries, seven others escaped with minor injuries and were all transported to Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital (TMRH) for further medical care.

“DEMS rescue teams from both Wadeville and Hlahatsi Fire stations, swiftly responded to the scene after receiving the call around 02.05am.

“The drivers were still stuck behind the steering wheels when the rescue team arrived on scene and specialised Hydraulic Rescue Tools (Jaws of Life) had to be used to free the injured and the deceased from the wreckages,” said Ntladi.

Both drivers were declared dead on scene by the paramedics.

He said that as per information received on scene, one of the vehicles was traveling southbound into oncoming traffic before the fatal accident took place.

“Two other motorists tried to avoid the crash but ended crashing with other two vehicles travelling North of the freeway.”

The freeway was closed to traffic for the duration of the accident.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police officers were on the scene investigating the actual cause of the crash.
