Dead cop was driving in a car with number plates belonging to a stolen car

A police investigation has revealed that the cop who allegedly took his own life while being chased by an Anti Hijack Unit officer was driving in a Polo Vivo that had been fitted with false number plates.

The Boksburg SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Cebisa Maseko, said investigators traced the apparently cloned number plates to a vehicle that was stolen in Honeydew last year.

She added that the Polo Vivo itself was not stolen – it is legit and was registered under the deceased cop’s wife’s name.

Capt Det Chetty, of Moroka Police Station, was reportedly driving along Rondebult Road when the Anti Hijack Unit members flagged him down.

It was reported that Chetty continued to drive, leading the Anti Hijack Unit members on a high-speed chase along the road.

The chase continued on Rondebult Road and ended next to the Checkers Hyper, after one of the Anti Hijack Unit members involved, allegedly shot out the tyres of the cop’s Polo Vivo.

The car reportedly screeched to a halt, before the police officer allegedly took out his service pistol and shot himself and died instantly.

And two major questions still remain to be answered: what is it that prompted the police officer to take his own life while being chased?

What triggered the Anti Hijack Unit members to flag down the cop’s car and use deadly weapons to force the car to a halt?

The Anti Hijack Unit member who allegedly opened fire on the cop’s car during the high-speed chase has since been arrested.

He has been charged with attempted murder, and is due to appear in court today. -@FanieFLK
