Villa Liza RDP homes issue addressed

The Human Settlements Department has responded to the incident that happened in Villa Liza where community members vandalised 86 newly built RDP houses, on April 26.

Eight cars and three houses belonging to community liaison officers were also set alight during the incident.

The Human Settlements Department has stated that there has not been any further allocation of RDP houses due to the resultant violence.

The Provincial Government together with the Ekurhuleni Metro have undertaken a community consultative meeting to address the identified concerns.

A public meeting took place in the area and the MMC for Human Settlements, Clr Aubrey Nxumalo met with the community to explain the beneficiary allocation processes.

The Department of Human Settlements also held a consumer education campaign conducted by the relevant section of the province to create awareness about the subsidy programmes of the department.

The police were also consulted and engaged in talks in relation to the criminal activities that resulted in the damages of the completed RDP houses.

The province has since obtained necessary funding for the repairs to the damaged and vandalised 86 houses.

The Human Settlements Department highlighted that the process of allocation of the houses will begin as soon as the environment is conducive to enable peaceful allocation of outstanding houses.
