Strong winds expected to hit Gauteng overnight

The Ekurhuleni Metro warns residents that the South African weather forecasters predict that strong and damaging winds will hit Gauteng from midnight until the wee hours of Wednesday, August 3.

Watch as tornado sweeps through Tembisa.

According to metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, these winds are sudden and can cause much damage.

“Residents are advised to stay indoors where possible away from the windows that open towards the severe winds.

“Those who are travelling should be aware of cross winds especially between buildings and flying debris, and should stay clear of fallen trees and power lines.

“Small boats must stay away from the open sea and seek the shelter of a harbour, river estuary or protected bay. Parked aircraft should be pointed into the direction of the wind and secured.

“The metro’s Disaster and Management Services officials will be on high alert for as long as the adverse weather conditions persist.”

Should there be an emergency residents are encouraged to contact the Ekurhuleni emergency centre on (011) 458 0911/ 10177.
