An open letter to metro regarding Boksburg South power outages

Rob Howard of Sunward Park writes:

I would like to bring to your attention the fact that we, in Freeway Park and Sunward Park, were without electricity for seven hours on Wednesday, July 20; for six hours on Friday, July 22; for four hours on Saturday, July 23, and four six hours on Monday, July 25.

Our accounts do not drop as a result of us not using electricity for 21 hours, nor do we get compensated for the money we spend on fuel for our generators – in our case R1 200.

This is totally unacceptable. I, for one, am on oxygen at night and to have my oxygen switched off so unceremoniously at 4am is very frightening.

My wife is on a ResMed machine which inflates her airways while she sleeps, and the mask suctions to her face when the current goes off, thus we are woken up at a very early hour.

Another problem we have is the lack of streetlights in Freeway Park. Waaiboom and Spekboom roads have a severe lack of lighting, as all the light bulbs have gone out.

This makes our neighborhood very dark indeed, and not very safe. It would be appreciated if all these problems could be sorted out as soon as possible.

We strongly suggest that cables be replaced rather than a path job being done, and that street lights throughout Boksburg be replaced where necessary.

* Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe responded as follows:

“The cables were repaired and power was restored. On Saturday, July 23, Ekurhuleni Metro’s officials on standby saw that the phasing was wrong and corrected it as they received complaints in this regard.

“When restoring power back to Freeway Park and Sunward Park a current transformer was found to be faulty and repaired thereof.

“On Monday, July 25, it was found that the Solkor Protection of the Substation was not working and it was corrected.

“We regret that there was so many outages but it was necessary to ensure a safe and adequate electrical supply to the areas.

“The street light complaints in Waaiboom and Spekboom streets is noted and repairs will be done in the next week.”
