The hope of the nation

Below is a list of SA athletes to look out for in Rio.

Chad le Clos

Arguably the most decorated athlete in SA history, Le Clos disrupted world swimming’s status quo by sensationally defeating the most decorated Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps at the London showpiece four years ago. Le Clos, will be looking to defend his crown come Rio.

Wayde van Niekerk

Van Niekerk sent shockwaves around the world of athletics in the IAAF World Championships in Beijing last year, beating favoured American LeShawn Merritt and winning the 400m in 43.48 seconds, putting him 4th on the world all-time list. Only American triumvirate Michael Johnson, Butch Reynolds and Jeremy Wariner have run faster.

Akani Simbine

Akani Simbine’s 9.89 seconds performance in the 100m did not only see him beat former world record holder Asafa Powell recently, but he also smashed the SA record, giving him a good chance in grabbing an Olympic medal in the highly competitive 100m event.
