Talking fashion, make-up for the winter season

Monica Groome, a qualified image consultant, entertained her fellow members at the East Rand Business Women's May meeting by sharing some beauty tips for the upcoming winter.

The presentation, held on May 11 at the Birchwood, fell in line with the celebrations around Mother’s Day.

Groome shared some ideas on how to enhance one’s own personal style, shared tips on the current winter fashion trends and revealed make-up tips on knowing your skin type, if you are a soft, medium, deep or rich tone.

According to Groome, dressing well is an investment in your self-esteem as it boosts your character because the clothes you wear define who you are.

“Seek to understand what styles, colours, patterns, and fit best complement you. Knowing what suits you will save your time and money because you will work with what you’ve got.

“It is important to optimise what you have to bring out the beauty in everything you wear. You will ensure that the contents in your wardrobe are timeless, and that your appearance is the best it can be,” Groome said.

“Dressing smart and appropriate does create a successful impression and it even instils a sense of self-belief and motivation.”

Groome also talked about the importance of knowing one’s skin colour in order to buy the right make-up powder or foundation.

She explained that a typical soft skin has an extremely pale, fair, porcelain skin tone and therefore the overall skin tone must be pale enough to be analysed as a soft.

A typical medium has an overall sun-kissed golden skin tone or an overall rosy (sometimes ruddy) skin tone while a typical deep complexion has an overall olive, Mediterranean, light brown or light black skin tone.

The fourth skin tone – typically rich – has an overall dark brown to dark black appearance.

Groome also shared winter fashion tips such as mixing silver and gold.

“One of the hottest trends this winter season is to mix these two gorgeous metals in your fashion. Also print fashion wear is the trend.

“The beauty of brown is its versatility; as it can be worn by all skin tones from soft, to medium to deep or rich.

“Co-ordinate with both warm colours (yellow, orange, red, purple) and cool colours (blues and greens). You will be surprised by fabulous results,” Groome said.
