DA mayoral candidate visits ‘forgotten community’

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) mayoral candidate for Ekurhuleni, Ghaleb Cachalia, visited the Angelo informal settlement’s forgotten community, to get first hand information of the plight of the shack-dwellers.

Accompanied by a group of local DA ward councillors, Cachalia met with residents of the area on Tuesday, May 17.

During the meeting, residents complained about the lack of essential services, such as water supply, roads and electricity, as well as the environmentally-unfriendly illegal dumping surrounding the settlement.

The area does not have essential services such as access to housing, electricity and proper roads, and thousands of households are still using the unwanted bucket toilet system.

Ward councillor Hillary Coke said she is fully sympathetic to their plight and the difficult conditions under which the residents often have to survive.

She added that she has already send emails to the relevant departments, asking government officials to attend to the problems faced by the community. -@FanieFLK
