ANC heavyweights attend memorial service for bus victims

The African National Congress (ANC) held a memorial service for 10 of its members who died in the tragic bus accident in the Free State, at the weekend.

The service took place in Vosloorus on April 21 and was attended by ANC heavyweights, including its general secretary Gwede Mantashe, treasurer Zweli Mkhize‚ minister of health Aaron Motsoaledi‚ Chris Hani’s wife Limpho‚ MP Mathole Matshekga‚ and ANC Youth League president Collen Maine.

The 10 deceased were all members of the ANC in Ekurhuleni.

They are Tiisetso Tselo, Sesi Mtshali, Sana Sibeko, Mphikeleli Malindi, Gugulethu Sithole, Vusi Nkabinde, Daphney Linda, Sicelo Kheswa, Sphamandla Gedle and Simphiwe Nhlapo.

The funeral service is expected to take place on April 23, in Vosloorus.

The 10 died when the bus on which they were travelling from the ANC manifesto launch in Port Elizabeth to Ekurhuleni overturned on the N1 highway, between Ventersburg and Winsburg, on April 17.

The mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mondli Gungubele, visited the accident scene and the accident survivors at various hospitals on Sunday.

Gungubele passed on his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the survivors a speedy recovery.

He expressed shock at the bus accident.

“There is no way to describe how I feel right now. These comrades were with us as we launched our manifesto, and today they are no more. May their souls rest in peace,”he said.

“The loss of one life is a disaster enough. This is a devastation.”
