Potgieter races to Emperors cycle crown

Team RoadCover cyclist Bradley Potgieter displayed his sprinting potency as he burst to victory in the men’s 98km Emperors Palace Cycle Classic race on Sunday, April 10.

Potgieter dedicated the win to his team including Clint Hendricks, Kent Main, Stuart Fitzpatrick and Gustav Basson after crossing the finish line in 2:07:50.

The Maritzburg front man assumed the role of his team’s prime sprinter following the team’s first-choice sprinter, Hendricks, falling ill during the build-up to the race.

Potgieter was closely followed by Demarco Pillay from Nelspruit who finished in 2:08:02.

The women’s race was owned by Anriette Schoeman from team Africa Silks-Bestmed as she added yet another title to her decorated cycling resume.

The Port Elizabeth rider comfortably won the race in 2:32:22.

Meanwhile, Alberton’s Jason Williams emerged victorious in the men’s 46km mountain bike race on Saturday, while the women’s version was captured by Parkwood’s Amy McDougall.

Williams finished in 1:34:31 with McDougall crossing the finishing line in 1:38:46.
