RUGBY: Owls crush Benoni in league opener

The Boksburg Rugby Club launched their fresh Peregrine League campaign for 2016 with a crushing 38-10 win, over Benoni, at Prince George Park.

Berend Peens, Markus Leonard, Dirkie Burger, Kyle Hilton and Attie van der Nest all crossed the whitewash to give new coach and former Owls player Marcell Fourie a perfect start in his new seat. Fullback PJ Beukes also slotted a penalty.

Peens and Leonard scored a brace of tries each, as the Owls emphatically claimed a bonus point win.

The scoreboard could have been more humiliating for the visitors had the Owls converted their tries, but Fourie’s troops missed all their attempts at goal following every single try.

“It was a good game,” said the Owls mentor.

“The boys played hard, but we still have a lot of work to do. We missed all seven conversions plus a penalty, so you’re looking at 17 points missed.

“At least we have five points in the bag with a very tough game against East Rand United, this weekend (March 13).”
