Man attempting to save unroadworthy truck nabbed for bribing police

The EMPD has arrested a man who tried to stop an unroadworthy truck from being impounded by bribing the police with R500.

EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said the Ekurhuleni Metro Police By-Law Unit members stopped a seemingly battered Toyota Dyna laden with old tyres at 11.30am yesterday (February 15), along Leeuwpoort Street, in the Boksburg CBD.

“The three occupants of the 7.5 tonner Dyna truck informed the Metro police that they were transporting the old tyres to an open veld to burn them with the objective of harvesting the wire to sell it as scrap metal.

“Due to the extremely poor condition of the truck, the Metro police were compelled to discontinue the vehicle,” said Kgasago.

It was impounded and taken to the EMPD Boksburg pound.

Kgasago said on arrival at the Boksburg offices, to complete paper work for the impounded truck, the officers were approached by a man claiming to be a messenger of the truck owner.

The “messenger” produced R500 in cash and tried to bribe the officers to turn a blind eye to the offence.

The 33-year-old man was read his rights, handcuffed and taken to the Boksburg SAPS, where he was charged with bribery as well as interfering in metro police duties.

He is expected appear in the Boksburg Magistrate Court soon.
