Atlasville Spruit’s master plan set in motion

Ward 23's Clr André du Plessis., recently held a public meeting with the community of Atlasville, during which a presentation was given on the landscaping proposal for Atlasville Spruit.

This forms part of phase two of the ongoing clean-up project and maintenance of the spruit.

Neline Swanepoel, from Ekurhuleni Parks and Cemeteries, presented the Atlas Spruit Park master plan to the community.

The proposal consisted of improvements to be made to the pathways and benches, bird hide and children’s play area, the upgrading bridges, to make theme wheelchair friendly and keeping a 10m strip of natural area against the river, with no grass cutting, while the rest of the lawn will be manicured.

Other plans include rehabilitation of erosion at storm water inlets, pathways on both sides of the river and water overflow zones.

In the children’s play area, benches will be placed under trees and existing play equipment will also receive a touch-up.

Still in the children’s play area, a 10m natural buffer line will be implemented, along with a swing, a new pathway and an entangled climber.

Extra parking bays are also planned.

The first phase consisted of planting a certain type of grass to avoid soil erosion and the replacing of the veld grass.

The metro, years ago, also undertook to spray the reeds at regular intervals, maintain the playground equipment and plant more trees.
