Brown dog’s owner states her side of story regarding attack on boy

Ragni Naiker, from Boksburg, writes,

I am the owner of the brown dog that attacked a boy in Ravensklip, allegedly for no reason.

Sadly, some of the information that was printed in the Advertiser (January 29 issue) is not correct and a proper investigation was not done.

It should firstly be stated there are no two small dogs in my yard as reported by the neighbour. I have two adult dogs and a baby dog.

Regarding the occurrence of events: on January 20, at around 4.30pm, I arrived home accompanied by my grandson, a 14-year-old boy. We noticed the neighbours standing on the pavement talking.

My grandson jumped out of the car to open the gate for me to drive in, as the gates are always closed and locked.

While opening the gate, the brown dog, which allegedly bit the school learner, ran out of the gate and into the street.

As I turned to my right to see where my dog was, I saw this boy walking towards the car with a stick in his hand and, at the same time, I saw the dog jumping on him.

My grandson ran out of gate and shouted at the dog, which then ran back into the yard.

My grandson closed the gate, took the dog to the pool area and secured the pool gate. He then came back to open the gate for me to drive in.

At that time I saw the boy walk back towards his house.

After parking my vehicle and making sure the gate was closed and locked, I went next door to see if the boy was alright and if he was in shock.

I was told that he had been taken to the doctor already.

The point that needs to be made here is that at the time that I was attempting to drive into my yard, the gate had to be opened, which allowed the dog to get outside.

But how else for the dog to react when someone approaches me and the house with a stick in the hand?

Apparently there was also someone who reportedly helped the boy at the time of the attack, but was himself not injured.

This also doesn’t make sense; if you rush in to help you would also sustain some kind of injury.

Editor’s note: This correction is being published as the Advertiser at the time of publishing the article failed to get a comment from the dog’s owner.
