Reiger Park student part of Ekurhuleni’s cream of the crop

Living in a drug and violence stricken neighbourhood motivated Reiger Park's Ernest Molelle to achieve academic excellence in his matric examinations.

Molelle, from Reiger Park Secondary School, did brilliantly by obtaining first and third place in physical science in Gauteng and nationally, respectively.

He also came third nationally in the quantile two category.

All South African public ordinary schools are categorised into five groups, called quintiles, largely for purposes of the allocation of financial resources. Quintile one is the ‘poorest’ quintile, while quintile five is the ‘least poor’.

“My primary goal was to rekindle hope. We live in a drug and violence stricken neighbourhood and I’ve always believed that these conditions are just the results of something deeper which is hopelessness,” said Molelle.

He hopes his achievements will help people to find the drive to overcome the circumstances and obstacles they face on a daily basis.

He will be studying actuarial science at the University of Cape Town (UCT).

Molelle was among Ekurhuleni’s brightest who were also honoured and congratulated by the Ekurhuleni mayor, Mondli Gungubele, during a ceremony held in Randburg.

Other top achievers in Ekurhuleni were mathematics top achiever Lesibana Thabiso Rammutla from Erasmus Monareng Secondary School in Vosloorus, Mandla Shaun, mathematics top achiever from Ponego Secondary School in Katlehong, Nosipho Shabane, top achiever in business studies from Springs Girls High in Springs and Phweziwe Mkhalane from Unity High School in Daveyton, who bagged eight distinctions.

Speaking after the announcement of the Gauteng NSC results, Gungubele said these youngsters were proof that nothing can defeat hard work.

“These youngsters should be considered role models in whose hands the future of our country lies.

“However, as South Africans we must also support those of our youngsters who could not make it last year. They must know that despite the temporary hiccup, we also have faith in them to pull through next time,” said Gungubele.

The City of Ekurhuleni will soon announce the recipients of its bursary scheme.
