To get the ball rolling, the Ekurhuleni Municipal Electoral Officer (MEO), Dr Imogen Mashazi recently officially appointed a team of 11 officials to serve during the 2016 Local Government elections.
The team is made up of nine Sub-MEOs as well as the Deputy Sub-MEO and the MEO at a cooperate level.
Each appointed member of the team had to undergo intense scrutiny and reference checks to verify their authenticity through the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) vetting processes.
Addressing the newly appointed elections team, Mashazi emphasised the importance of being decisive, disciplined and fair so as to allow a free and fair election process.
“You you have been appointed to be the broader IEC’s intelligence on the ground and we rely heavily on you to report back to us with urgency all issues affecting your areas,” said Mashazi.
The main responsibilities of a Sub-MEO include liaising between the municipality and the IEC, being available for consultation by IEC members and officials in electoral matters, overall supervision of election matters in the Sub-MEOs area, and to ensure that conditions in the area are conducive for free and fair elections to take place.
