Finally, troublesome sewer line in Reiger Park fixed

After a long delay the municipality has finally repaired the troublesome sewer line which rendered a Reiger Park family’s house uninhabitable.

This came after the Advertiser published a story (November 20 issue) about the family’s plight.

For years the family was forced to endure an unbearable odour emanating from a pool of raw sewage that surrounded their house.

Apparently the defects in the sewer line running below Butch Jantjies Drive caused sewage backup and pushed the raw sewage into the house at 952 Butch Jantjies Drive.

The drains on the property have been spewing thousands of litres of raw sewage into the yard intermittently since 1990 despite several complaints.

The problem has been fixed but the family criticised the council for allowing raw sewage to flood their property and run down the street for such a long period of time.

Ward councillor Charlie Crawford also lamented the municipality’s failure to permanently repair damaged sewers in his locality.

Crawford said the fault lies at the metro’s sewerage pumping station that should be moving sewage from the township to the treatment plant.

“The area has been plagued by persistent drainage issues for more than two decades because of the dysfunctional municipal underground sewer system, which is of poor quality,” he said.

“Most of the sewer pipes are also blocked, which causes sewage to overflow onto properties. This is not only a human rights violation, but a health hazard as well.” -@FanieFLK
