Anger brews over ‘Festival of Trauma’ for dogs

Fireworks that were set off as part of the Diwali celebrations sent a resident of Van Dyk Park into a rage.

Celeste Pringle was scathing over the way the devotees to celebrations had conducted themselves in regard to shooting fireworks on November 10 and 11.

She thought it ridiculous that her dogs had to endure the pain that comes with fireworks for two nights in a row.

“Those devoted to the Diwali celebrations need to show and exercise consideration – our dogs are cooped up inside our house at this time of the night (8.53pm, November 11),” she said.

“The dogs shook from the trauma and fear caused by these ridiculous celebrations.

“I had to keep my dogs inside during a heat wave because of the fireworks. They should be outside in the yard protecting us.”

She said criminals will use the opportunity to break in because dogs are crippled with trauma.

“Fireworks need to stop, period. Can a petition not be drawn up to get people to adhere to laws regarding the well-being and consideration of the hundreds of dogs they traumatise unnecessarily, just because of a festival?” she asked.

She suggested that the devotees should rather just “light candles and lamps” since it is also called the Festival of Lights, adding: “We can’t have this turning it into a Festival of Trauma for dogs”.
