Narrative centre opens to tell Tambo’s story

A world class establishment exhibiting the life and times of the late struggle veteran Oliver Tambo was unveiled recently by Ekurhuleni Mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele and Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe.

The Tambo Narrative Centre is situated within the O R Tambo Precinct in Wattville – where the political giant spent 12 years of his life – and houses a multimedia experience narrating Tambo’s life story.

The 420 square meter venue is adorned with expressive photographs, newspaper clippings, posters and artwork, as well as six cubicles e,ach titled with quotes chosen from Tambo’s life journey.

Each of the cubicles is fitted with a television screen and chairs for visitors to view historic recordings.

“The present history without the past one will never give you a complete identity, therefore, establishing this institution is our way of affirming our identity and to show appreciation to our heritage as the City of Ekurhuleni.

“The narrative centre is established to assist us to trace back our historic steps in an effort to keep the road travelled intact,” said Gungubele during his welcome speech.

Established curator and project manager at the centre Keamogetse Modise led the mayor, the Minister, Dali Tambo and Rachel Tambo, Tambo Foundation chairperson Mavuso Msimang and many other dignitaries present, on a guided tour of the facility where they reflected on the moments they spent with Tambo.

During his keynote address, Radebe applauded the Ekurhuleni for preserving and celebrating one of the nation’s jewels.

“You have done well, OR dedicated his entire life to the struggle; his passion for the liberation of the people never wavered, thus this is a befitting way to honour his life,” said Radebe.

The narrative centre is open to the public, free of charge, from 9am to 4.30pm on weekdays.
