MMA fans in for EFC 44 title feasts; watch video

On October 3, three South African champions will put national pride on the line as they face the biggest foreign invasion in EFC history, at Carnival City.

Headlining the star-studded EFC 44 card is a heavy-striking collision which will see champion Andrew ”One Gear” van Zyl defending his crown against France’s dangerous Cyril ”Silverback” Asker.

The latter has forced the country’s MMA fraternity to stand up and take notice, following his win over decorated EFC fighter Ruan Potts, at EFC 40.

However, van Zyl’s determination not to relinquish the title he so impressively and convincingly won from Brendon Groenewald, means that MMA aficionados are in for what’s building up to potentially be the biggest fight in the history of EFC’s heavyweight division.

The night’s supporting main event will see the reigning, defending and undisputed lightweight champion Leon ”Iron Lion” Mynhardt taking on challenger Themba ”The Answer” Gorimbo.

The undefeated Zimbabwean (5-0) has impressed, and whether he’ll be the one to put a halt to Mynhardt’s dominance in the division remains to be seen.

The Iron Lion (16-6) has also been undefeated in his last five fights and whoever comes out victorious will maintain an impressive run, on top of holding the EFC lightweight gong.

The night’s first title clash will see Boyd Allen putting his strap on the line against Scotland’s Daniel Henry.

The champion goes into the match tipped as the heavy favourite to retain his championship, but a confident Henry is sure of dbeating the odds and causing an upset.

He’s likened the match-up to the Springboks and Japan shocker which transpired at the Rugby World Cup.

“I can see my fight with Boyd going down similarly to the SA vs Japan Rugby World Cup game; it will be close, but the underdog will pull it off,” he said.

Will the champions successfully defend their titles and national pride, or will the foreign invasion spoil the party? – @SabeloBoksburg
