Golden time: Douglas betters South Korea feat

Boksburg swimming star Douglas Erasmus enjoyed another personal milestone when he won the men’s 50m freestyle event on day six of the 11th edition of the All Africa Games, in Brazaville, Congo.

The Tuks student blitzed to a 22.61 seconds finishing time, to break his previous personal best time of 22.67, which he set at the World Student Games, in South Korea, in July.

The 50m gold added to the gold he won in the men’s 4x100m freestyle race, on day four, when Team SA cleared the pool.

Erasmus swam a flying first leg of 50.22 seconds to ,set the tone before he and his team of Calvyn Justus, Clayton Jimmie and Caydon Muller took the gold.

Jimmie and Justus swam the second and third legs respectively, before Muller anchored Team SA to victory.

“I’m very happy with my performances, both in the relay and in the 50m,” said the 25-year-old Erasmus.

“I swam my best time ever in the 50m.”

Day four proved to be one of the better days for SA’s swimming team, as they won seven medals from six races, including three gold, three silver and one bronze.

Pretoria’s Tatjana Schoemaker beat Egypt’s Maii Atif and Namibia’s Daniela Lindemeier in the women’s 100m breaststroke, with a time of 1:09.47.

Ayrton Sweeney added to SA’s gold medal tally with a time of 2:14.41 in the 200m breaststroke, finishing ahead of Tunisia’s Wassim Elloumi and Egypt’s Yossif Elkamash.

The South Africa versus Egypt rivalry continued in the women’s 100m butterfly, while Egypt’s Farida Osman denied the SA duo of Vanessa Mohr (1:00.26) and Rita (1:03.86) Naude, as she finished in 58.83.

In an entertaining 400m freestyle race, Egypt’s Ahmed Akram (3:48.06) edged out Myles Brown for the gold, with the South African settling for silver in a time of 3:48.69. – @SabeloBoksburg
