Titans bowls Angelo crèche over with kind-hearted gesture

Players from the Unlimited Titans traded their pads and bats for paint-brushes and spades, as they sought to give underprivileged preschool Happiness Crèche, in Angelo, a makeover on Tuesday, September 8.

Lead by their coach, Rob Walters, the squad met the children from the crèche before beginning the mini makeover as part of The Unlimited Child Programme’s Love Day.

The crèche, which is part of The Unlimited Child Programme, was founded in 2006.

The day saw hands-on involvement from the Titans squad as they painted the crèche, cleaned the yard, repaired the swings, planted in the vegetable garden and built a bike track, to list some of the makeover touches.

Asked how he was finding the experience on the day, Titans captain Albie Morkel said: “It’s been a good workout; it’s been a nice and humbling experience. I’m not used to such exercise, but it feels good giving back to the community.

“This is something I’ve learned in my life before, and that’s to be grateful for what I have. You don’t see this every day and it just makes you realise how fortunate you are.”

Morkel’s trainer, Walters, echoed his skipper’s views.

“There can be no greater thing than to give to someone less fortunate than yourself. It’s been awesome making a difference in someone else’s life; we don’t get these opportunities every day,” he said.

“We lose sight of the privileges that we, as professional sports persons, have and today was just another reminder of how lucky we are.”

Founded in 2008, in KwaZulu-Natal, The Unlimited Child Programme is an NGO that caters for more than 700 crèches. It operates in six of the country’s nine provinces, namely KZN, the Western and Eastern Cape Provinces, Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

Crèche owner Patrick Macheli also lauded the day’s proceedings.

“Today has been a dream come true,” he said.

”I started the garden to feed and support the children, because they are the future of South Africa.

“We prepare them for school so they can get an education one day and make a difference in the country. I want to give them the opportunity I never had, and that’s to get an education.

The Titans are scheduled to be involved in a few friendly matches before their season gets underway on October 9, against Chevrolet Warriors. – @SabeloBoksburg
